Sotheby's Contemporary Art Evening Auction 29 June

The Sotheby's Contemporary Art Evening Auction on 29 June in London will present a selection of works of major significance, including 34 lots from The Duerckheim Collection, the most important private collection of post-war German Art ever to be offered for public sale. The Duerckheim Collection includes early and formative masterpieces by Georg Baselitz, Gerhard Richter, Sigmar Polke, Blinky Palermo and several others, which document their exhilarating advancements of the 1960s. The appearance of paintings of this quality, art historical significance and freshness to market is exceptionally rare and represents a very special auction moment.

Lots 35 to 88 include paintings and sculptures of the highest order, led by Francis Bacon's stunning Crouching Nude of 1961, Jean-Michel Basquiat's heroic Untitled of 1981, and two paintings by Andy Warhol: the truly iconic 1962 Campbell's Soup Can (Tomato) and his spellbinding Debbie Harry of 1980. Portraits of women confidantes of two titans of Contemporary Art, the definitive emblem of Pop Art, and a monumental exclamation of Basquiat's inimitable aesthetic; these masterpieces respectively summate the remarkable careers and innovation of their authors. While Property from the Collection of Dave Stewart incorporates two stunning early spot paintings by Damien Hirst, further major works by Basquiat, Christopher Wool and Jeff Koons spearhead a superlative congregation that Sotheby's is proud to present for auction.
