'Star Gazing' Commissions, National Trust, Mottisfont

For Christmas 2012, The National Trust at Mottisfont wishes to commission a number of ‘Stars’ to form a ‘trail’ within the grounds. Artists and makers are invited to submit proposals to create or exhibit a ‘Star’ for temporary installation at Mottisfont from 1st December 2012 to 27th January 2013.

This builds on the success of the ‘Angel Garden’ (Dec 2011 – Jan 2012), when 15,000 visitors enjoyed 8 sculptures on the theme of ‘Angels’ installed at various sites around the grounds at Mottisfont.
This is an opportunity for the selected artists/makers to produce a piece of work in response to a unique rural location with the potential for their work to be seen by a large audience. The selectors will also consider existing pieces of work for exhibition.
The ‘Star’ should ideally be a three-dimensional object, created from materials that are durable enough to survive a two-month long installation outdoors in winter.
Proposals should include:
  • Your curriculum vitae / artist’s statement
  • Up to 5 images of previous work. It is preferable for works to be submitted on CD. Please do not submit ORIGINAL artworks.
  • A visual representation and brief explanation of your proposal, its dimensions, construction, materials and installation requirements.
  • If you are familiar with Mottisfont it would also be useful to know about any preference you may have for a specific location within the gardens at Mottisfont.
Proposals to arrive no later than 5:00pm on Friday, 14 September 2012.
The successful artists/makers will be informed by Monday, 24 September 2012.
The ‘Star’ will need to be manufactured and delivered for installation no later than Friday, 16 November 2012.
Full details can be downloaded at:
If you would like any visual materials or disks to be returned, please enclose a stamped addressed envelope covering the cost of return postage.  Please send your proposals to:

Rachel Whiteread at the Whitechapel Gallery

Artist Rachel Whiteread, who won the Turner Prize in 1993 after creating 'House', a cast of the interior of an East End terrace, and who filled the Tate Turbine Hall in in 2005-6 with 'Embankment', a maze-like arrangement of 14,000 white casts of the inside of different cardboard boxes, has created a new, permanent work of art for the façade of the Whitechapel Gallery's main entrance.

The work takes inspiration from the decorative 'tree of life' motif which is part of the existing architecture.

ABOUT THE RE
The Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers (RE) is Britain's longest established elected body of professional artists who make prints. Its on-going purpose is to promote and encourage the highest standards of creative and technical excellence in printmaking in all its diverse forms. Founded in 1880 by Sir Francis Seymour Haden, it was originally titled the Society of Painter Etchers and established to counter the Royal Academy of Artsʼ refusal, at that time, to recognise printmaking as a creative rather than reproductive art.

The RE holds regular exhibitions of Membersʼ prints at Bankside Gallery, London and other venues, showing traditional skills - etching, lithography, wood engraving and mezzotint - alongside the latest digital, photographic and mixed media techniques. Its 200-strong membership includes artists from all over the world including the USA, Japan, Argentina and Europe.
